Nostalgia Drink, Soojeonggwa

DwC 053

If you'd asked me before I drank this what nostalgia tasted like I wouldn't have had a clue. If you asked me again afterwards I wouldn't have been any the wiser, except to say that Koreans think it tastes like syrupy cinnamon.

Like many other drinks tested here, this is a cool tasting tea like drink with a little too much sugar. The flavours are enhanced in this instance with cinnamon, ginger and persimmon, which is all very nice. But once again misleading packaging has let it down. To my eyes the can clearly shows two different types of chunkage; one large fleshy ruby sinker and three nutty floaters. However, nothing of the sort was to be found. Despite vigorous shaking there was no ruby red head to poke it's way out or little white tear drops to drain from it.

They say revenge is a dish best served cold. I say nostalgia is a drink best served lumpy.

Hi. I was just perusing my local Lotte Super in Daegu for something...intriguing and unidentifiable, and I came across this same Soojeonggwa. I just now gulped it down, then googled it, and your blog was one of the top hits! Your blog is called "DRINKS WITH CHUNKS"!!! I can't stop laughing. Then, upon reading your entry on this strange nostalgia drink, I can't stop laughing even more!! Thanks for enlightening my experience;).

Your blog is hilarious!
I'd like to shed a little light on the lack of "chunks" in this awesome drink called "soojeonggwa".
The three little seeds in the picture are pine nuts, and the "large fleshy ruby sinker" is a dried persimmon. Both are added to the drink right before serving, which would explain why they were missing from the can. Besides this, I would highly suggest you try a homemade version, especially if there's a Korean restaurant/grocery store/bakery/rice cake store around you. Soojeonggwa and Shikhye are gross from a can.
